Summary

It is a welcome sign of the times that there are now a plethora of coupes capable of achieving fuel economy figures that would have embarrassed superminis just a few years ago. The Scirocco is one of the most desirable of the lot thanks in no small part to sharp styling which changed little from show car to production.

VW has a great reputation for build quality but driver involvement and aggressive styling were off the menu until the latest generation of models. The Scirocco looks great and has the ability to back this up with sharp handling helped by the standard Adaptive Chassis Control which allows three damper and steering settings to be selected.

The Volkswagen Scirocco has always been efficient but with the adoption of BlueMotion Technology it is now even better. The 2.0 TDI Common Rail diesel engine remains unchanged but the addition of engine stop/start to eradicate unnecessary idling and battery regeneration which reduces parasitic loads has taken fuel economy to a new level.

The Scirocco is keenly priced which may lead you to suspect that corners have been cut inside. In reality this couldn’t be further from the truth. Everything feels thoroughly well-engineered and it makes the cabin a great place to spend time.

The Scirocco is great looking, good to drive, very well built and it is even decently specified with the Adaptive Chassis Control and dual zone climate control being particularly welcome standard kit. Given the solidity and polish it is decent value too which makes it one of our favourite coupes.
