Summary

The MX-5 reinvented the small affordable sports car market, drawing on classic British sports cars like the MGB for inspiration. The results were spectacular and gave Mazda a runaway success. Now into its third generation the little Mazda is still at the top of its class. There have been a few dissenting voices this time but most people regard the 3rd MX-5 as a step forward. Its appearance has been subtly but very effectively evolved, giving the new car a much more muscular stance.

Mazda has looked to rectify the cramped cabin of previous models by increasing the size of the car.

However, thanks to the Japanese obsession for detail they have managed to keep the weight roughly the same. This is good news as it enables the Mazda to maintain class-leading fuel economy and its fine handling.

The MX-5 remains a beautifully balanced car. Mazda has worked hard not only on reducing weight but also on making sure that the weight is properly distributed. The steering has excellent feel and provides plenty of feedback allowing you to attack the limits. There is some understeer but thanks to the chassis a neutral or oversteering stance is easy to achieve.

The 1.8 petrol engine needs to be worked hard to get the best out of it, but it’s enough to produce spirited straight line performance and the MX-5 has always been more about fun in the corners than on the straights anyway. Despite the great handling the suspension remains compliant and the cabin is refined at speed.

The Mazda MX-5 is still a great and very affordable sports car. For those who are more interested in balance than 0-60 times the MX-5 takes some beating, at any price. Strong residuals and bullet-proof reliability also make it a sensible buy. With a more spacious interior than before and the same sharp dynamics it goes from strength to strength.
