Summary
The original Audi TT was a style icon which did a fantastic job of reinvigorating the Audi brand and attracting a whole new audience. Whilst it looked great there were always grumbles that the driving experience didn’t live up to the looks. With the second generation, Audi has updated the TT visually and given it the driving characteristics it always deserved. Until now the TT has missed out on a diesel engine. Indeed a few years ago the very thought of a performance orientated diesel coupe would have been dismissed out of hand, but it is a sign of how far diesel technology has come this is exactly what Audi has produced. The 2.0 litre TDI is compact enough to fit into the engine bay whilst still being capable of producing 168 bhp and 258 lbs/ft of torque from as little as 1,750 rpm. This is thanks to the use of common rail fuel injection, a new turbocharger with variable vane technology and the use of piezo injector nozzles which allow very precise control of fuel injection. The new engine is EURO 5 compliant ahead of the 2009/2011 deadlines. In order to meet the new requirements it has a diesel particulate filter and emissions of NOx are reduced by at least 20% compared to EURO 4 diesel but remain over 2 times higher than EURO 5 petrol requirements. The diesel Audi TT combines the style and substance of the petrol version with a useful reduction in CO2 emissions and more torque than the 3.2 litre V6 petrol. The EURO 5 compliant engine keeps particulate emissions in check and limits the extra NOx emissions making a compelling argument. Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive system completes the package.
