Buying a car - Green Tips

If you are looking for ways to help the environment then keep these tips in mind the next time you are thinking about purchasing a new car.

Consider Second-Hand - But Don't Forget About Fuel Efficiency

Dealers such as Evans Halshaw offer a great range of new cars
, as well as a wide selection of second-hand vehicles. A second-hand car does not require the mining and production of new materials, and is in essence a large piece of recycling. However, bear in mind that older cars may not be as fuel-efficient as new vehicles. Ask your dealer for any information they have on the fuel efficiency of their second-hand cars, or look online before you decide on your purchase. Higher fuel efficiency can save you money and help the environment, as the more fuel-efficient your car, the less CO2 emissions you release into the environment. Fuel-efficient cars also incur less road tax.

Think About Fuel

Cars which run on petrol generally produce more CO2 than those that run on diesel and are not as fuel-efficient as diesel engines. However, diesel engines produce more of the other air pollutants that can harm our environment and health such as soot and nitrogen oxides. If you choose a diesel car, make sure that it has been fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to reduce the emission of these substances. In general, diesel cars may be more suitable if you drive many long-distance or motorway journeys as you can take advantage of greater fuel efficiency, while a petrol car will be better for the air quality of your surroundings if you primarily drive in towns and cities.

There are vehicles available that use cleaner fuels than diesel or petrol, such as Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and electric or hybrid vehicles. Alternative fuel vehicles do not have to be a cost sink. Cars which can be charged by electricity may be available for a 'Plug-in Grant' which can cover one quarter of the car's cost, to a value of £5,000. LPG fuel is taxed at a lower rate than petrol or diesel, which translates to savings at the pump.

Choose The Smallest Car That Meets Your Needs

In general, the smaller the car and the smaller the engine, the more efficient the car's consumption of fuel. Smaller cars also use up less of the earth's resources in their manufacture.

Check for a High Euro Number

'Euro' numbers set limits on various emissions including soot, nitrogen oxides, and other substances that can harm the environment and our health. High Euro numbers indicate that the car produces less emissions and is less damaging to the environment. While all new cars have been required to meet the standards of Euro 5 in 2011 and will need to meet Euro 6 by 2015, some makes and models will fulfil the requirements before these deadlines and allow you to get ahead of the regulations in your care for the environment.
